Waterloo Garden Bridge
By Mike Storey
I have re-imagined London's Waterloo Bridge as a green space with side lanes retained for cycling and walking.
Adapting town centre public realm has moved to the top of the design agenda recently because of the pandemic. We are seeing the installation of temporary infrastructure for ‘active travel’ such as wider pavements and cycle lanes. In a recent survey, over 50% of Londoners said they would like to see the changes become permanent.
Taking the idea further, towns could re-landscape quiet side roads, transforming them into publicly accessible green spaces. Environmentally these changes would improve biodiversity, hit air quality, noise reduction and carbon emissions targets simultaneously, and provide a beneficial boost to human wellbeing.
